Background replacement only — facial features are never altered. Some authorities (US State Dept, UK HMPO, Canada IRCC) require unedited photos; check your destination's rules and prefer a real plain background when possible.
Align the top of the head between the guide lines (71–80% of the frame).

Australia follows the 35 x 45 mm ICAO photo standard with a 32-36 mm head height (71-80
percent of the frame). ImmiAccount accepts JPEG uploads; there is no published file-size
ceiling for visa photos, but keeping exports under 1 MB avoids upload timeouts. Use a
plain light background, a neutral expression, and no head covering unless it is worn for
religious reasons with the full face visible. ImmiAccount accepts uploads of any
reasonable file size, but the photograph must still be cropped to the true 35 x 45 mm
ratio - a US square crop will be stretched or rejected. Australians are notably tolerant
of light-grey backgrounds, which makes home shooting easier: any smooth wall out of
direct sun works. Keep a neutral closed-mouth expression; unlike some countries, both
eyebrows must be visible, so check fringe and brow movement before shooting. If you wear
glasses daily, glare-free frames are fine, but lift them slightly off the face to avoid
shadows on the cheeks. Photos for children follow the same dimensions; for babies unable
to hold their head up, lying them on a plain sheet and shooting from above is accepted.
Re-check the requirements page before each application because Home Affairs updates
guidance without notice.
Frequently asked questions
Does Australia require a specific background colour?
Plain and light - white or light grey. Patterned walls and strong shadows behind the head are the usual rejection causes.
Can I upload directly to ImmiAccount?
Yes, as JPEG. Crop to exactly the 35 x 45 mm ratio before uploading.
Are glasses allowed?
Yes, if frames do not hide the eyes and there is no flash reflection.
