For online applications IRCC specifies a digital photo between 715 x 1000 and

2000 x 2800 pixels, at most 4 MB, in JPEG or PNG - this tool exports 715 x 1000, the

official minimum, as a JPEG well under the limit. The underlying print format is

50 x 70 mm with the head (crown to chin) measuring 31-36 mm, which is only 44-51

percent of the frame height - noticeably more headroom than the US format. The generous

headroom rule catches almost everyone converting from US-style crops: with only 44-51

percent head height, your face occupies roughly half the frame, which looks 'zoomed

out' but is correct. Crop symmetrically - IRCC scans measure left-right centring too.

The background must be plain white without texture; do not over-brighten it, but avoid

grey gradients across the sheet. If you normally wear a hijab or turban, wear it in the

photo as you would in daily life, and ensure the entire face outline from chin to crown

stays inside the measurement. For printed copies, the person's name and date of birth

plus the photographer's name, address and declaration must be written on the back, and

original photos - not reprints of reprints - are expected. Digital uploads keep EXIF

orientation - rotate before uploading if your phone photo lands sideways.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Canada need more space above my head?

IRCC specifies a 31-36 mm head height on a 70 mm tall frame, so a crop preset made for US photos will fail; use the Canada preset on this site instead.

What resolution for the online application?

IRCC accepts 715 x 1000 to 2000 x 2800 pixels, up to 4 MB, JPEG or PNG. This tool exports 715 x 1000 JPEG - the official minimum, accepted everywhere.

Can I wear a head covering?

Only for religious reasons, and the full face from chin to crown must remain visible.
