Immigration New Zealand publishes unusually precise rules for digital visa and
NZeTA photos: the online upload must be a JPEG between 500 KB and 3 MB, sized
between 900 x 1200 and 2250 x 3000 pixels (a 3:4 ratio), and - uniquely among the
countries on this site - the background must be a plain light colour that is NOT
white. The head must measure 75 percent of the photo height and 70 percent of its
width, with the eyes placed in the upper half of the frame. This tool defaults to
900 x 1200 pixels, the smallest accepted size, and the compressor keeps your file
above the 500 KB floor by holding quality high; if your source photo is small, New
Zealand also accepts a print scanned at 35 x 45 mm. Stand against a pale grey or
cream wall, not a white one, and if your original background is white use the
background-swap option to shift it to a light grey before exporting. Plain daily
makeup is fine, glasses are allowed only if the frames do not cover the eyes, and
head coverings are permitted for religious or medical reasons provided the full
face from chin to forehead stays visible.
