Background replacement only — facial features are never altered. Some authorities (US State Dept, UK HMPO, Canada IRCC) require unedited photos; check your destination's rules and prefer a real plain background when possible.
Align the top of the head between the guide lines (70–80% of the frame).

The UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security
(ICP) follows ICAO photo standards for visa and residence applications: a 35-40 mm
wide portrait on a plain light background with the face filling 70-80 percent of
the frame. The ICP service guides used by typing centres apply the standard
3.5 x 4.5 cm print size, which at 300 DPI is exactly 413 x 531 pixels - the canvas
this tool exports. No file-size cap is published for the online upload, so the
preset leaves the limit off and exports at full quality. Shoot against a white or
very light wall in even light, face the camera directly with both eyes open, and
keep the full head from chin to hairline plus the top of the shoulders in frame.
Glasses are accepted only if they do not reflect light or cover the eyes; the
ICAO standard also rejects photos where facial features are obscured by shadow
bands from harsh overhead lighting. Applications for residence visas, visit
conversions, and Emirates ID all use the same photo, so one well-prepared crop
serves the whole application set. Because Amer centres and typing offices charge
for retakes, arriving with a compliant digital photo ready to upload saves both
time and repeat fees.
